IU was up against B.E.G's Narsha and Girls' Day's Sojin on the KBS New Year Special 'Crown Princess Project' which was aired on Jan 23rd, but finally emerged as the chosen Crown Princess on the show.
The Queen, Park Misun, said, "This is actually a question King Youngjo himself set in the past, when choosing the Queen. 'What is the tallest hill, the deepest thing in the world and your favourite flower?'"
IU replied,"The tallest hill is the barley hump (or farm hardship period). There's nothing more difficult than being in poverty. My parents have always worked hard, so we lived well, but we had difficult times too. The kind of feelings I had then were, 'Wow even the people I love are growing further away from me.'"
"I think the deepest thing in the world is the hearts of my parents and my favourite flower is the lily. Its fragrance is unrivalled and similarly, I would let to set myself apart from the rest too," she explained.
The rest of the cast members were in agreement of IU's honest remarks and Park Misun said, "In actual fact, at that time, Queen Jeongsun replied at the age of 15 that the tallest hill is the barley hump, the deepest thing in the world is the feelings of the masses, and her favourite flower was the cotton flower."
Also, at the second checkpoint, they had to recite the names of up to 27 kings of the Chosun dynasty (in order) and IU managed to do it perfectly from start to end, shocking the rest who were present. She also sang a modified version of Good Day, as well as dance her 'buffering' dance to score points.
When the gag man Kim Jiho arrived at the studio as the Crown Prince, IU kept laughing and couldn't bring herself to raise her head to face reality.
